Where is MIT located?
MIT is based in Cambridge, directly across the Charles River from Boston. The main campus spans 168 acres along a one-mile stretch of the riverfront, looking out towards Boston.
It's well-integrated into the urban fabric of Cambridge, particularly around Kendall Square – a global innovation hub known for its startups and tech companies. Cambridge itself is a historic city with intellectual roots as the home of both MIT and Harvard University.
Public transport is another big plus, as the university has its own subway station connecting students to downtown Boston in just 10 minutes. You can also reach the downtown area on foot, which takes around 45 minutes.
How is MIT University ranked?
MIT consistently ranks among the best universities in the world, often claiming top spot in the prominent QS World University Rankings and Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
At a subject level, MIT is considered one of the best places in the world (if not the best) to study numerous disciplines, including engineering, computer science, economics, mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, architecture, and business.
Its research output and impact are extraordinary, with countless connections to Nobel laureates, Fields medalists, and other prize winners, as well as major alumni-founded tech companies like Intel, BuzzFeed, and Dropbox.
Study programs at MIT
MIT offers an extensive range of undergraduate and graduate programmes across more than 50 different subject areas, covering everything from science, technology, and business management to arts and humanities.
The most popular courses are generally in science and technology – where MIT’s reputation is strongest – and include computer science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, and mathematics.
All courses – even humanities majors – involve a rigorous foundation in science and mathematics. There’s also a strong emphasis on practical learning through MIT’s famous ‘mens et manus’ (mind and hand) philosophy.
Student life at MIT
Campus life at MIT is unlike anywhere else. With fewer students than other leading universities, and all students based at the same campus, there's a really strong sense of community here.
Clubs and societies are central to student life with more than 450 of these set up, ranging from cultural associations to arts clubs and interest groups. It also has quirky campus traditions, like the Pumpkin Drop and MIT’s infamous ‘hacks’.
It’s not all academics either; the university has one of the most diverse athletics programs in the NCAA's Division III, with no less than 33 varsity sports on offer and teams regularly competing in national championships.
How much does it cost to study at MIT?
As a private university, studying at MIT doesn’t come cheap. A year’s tuition costs around $62,000, and factoring in other fees and living expenses, MIT estimates that the average student will need around $86,000 to cover a full year of study.
That said, MIT is one the few US universities that practices need-blind admissions, meaning your financial situation won't have an impact on your application. The university also pledges to cover 100% of demonstrated financial need for students.
International students are subject to the same tuition fees as domestic students and are also eligible for the same level of financial aid, which isn’t always the case with US universities.
Best neighborhoods to live off campus at MIT
If you’re looking to live off campus while studying at MIT, you have a number of options in the surrounding areas and further afield in Boston. Adjacent to campus, Kendall Square is the most convenient spot for students, but it also comes with premium prices.
Elsewhere in Cambridge, the neighborhoods of the Port, East Cambridge, and Cambridgeport all offer more affordable student housing while still being within a 15-minute journey of the university.
Just across the Charles River, Fenway-Kenmore is one of Boston’s main student hubs and a great place to find off-campus housing near MIT. The same is true for neighboring Back Bay, though prices will be slightly higher here.
