Where is George Washington University located?
George Washington University (GW) has three fully integrated campuses. The main one, which hosts the vast majority of academic programs, is based in Foggy Bottom, just a few blocks from downtown DC and major landmarks like the White House.
The secondary Mount Vernon Campus offers more of a traditional college vibe a few miles south of the city. It’s well-connected to the Foggy Bottom Campus thanks to the shuttle service operated by the university. GW’s third campus is based in Ashburn, VA.
This multi-campus model is one of the university’s main appeals. In Foggy Bottom, you get all the excitement of being in one of the world’s most dynamic and influential cities, but you can also swap the bustle of downtown for the rolling hills of the Mount Vernon Campus.
How is George Washington University ranked?
In US News & World Report’s most recent rankings, George Washington University was ranked as the 63rd best university in the US. It also landed in 371st place on the QS World University Rankings.
While GW ranks lower than DC counterpart Georgetown University and indeed many other universities in the US, it does have an excellent reputation for public policy, international affairs and several other disciplines.
In terms of admissions, GW is comparatively less competitive than many other top US universities. Acceptance rates have averaged around 45% in recent years, meaning nearly one in every two applicants is accepted.

The University Study Center, based in the heart of the main campus, serves as the main hub of student activities. Here you grab a quick meal in-between lectures, access support services and book rooms to study or socialize.
One of the main perks for students at GW is the location; you don’t have to venture far beyond campus to enjoy world-class performing arts at the Kennedy Center or eye-opening exhibitions at the 17 Smithsonian museums dotted around DC.
How much does it cost to study at George Washington University?
George Washington University is a private institution, meaning its fees are typically higher than the national average. According to GW’s latest figures, the cost of a year’s tuition is around $67,420.
Alongside other costs like housing, living expenses and administrative fees, the university estimates the combined annual cost at around $90,000. However, many students will be eligible for financial aid, which can help reduce this figure.
For international students, tuition fees and access to financial support tend to be different – so make sure to do your own research based on your circumstances.
Best neighborhoods to live off campus at George Washington University
Many of George Washington University’s residence halls are based outside of DC on the Mount Vernon Campus, so if you want to be in the hustle and bustle of downtown, you may have more options living off campus.
There are plenty of options in the areas immediately surrounding the main campus. Many students choose to live in Foggy Bottom, while neighboring Dupont Circle is another popular area where you’re still within walking distance of the university.
If you’re looking for somewhere cheaper – albeit slightly further from downtown – Navy Yard is a great option. Based in the southeast of DC, this up-and-coming neighborhood has loads for students to do and is just a 15-minute journey to campus.
